The Isle La Motte Preservation Trust owns slightly over 100 acres of the Chazy Reef in two preserves. In 2009 these sites received the designation of National Natural Landmark along with privately owned land on Isle La Motte and Valcour and Crab Islands owned by New York State.
The Goodsell Ridge Preserve is an 81 acre reef site with a Visitor’s Center/ Museum, interpretive paths, and walking trails. Follow the Main Road on Isle La Motte south to Quarry Road. Turn left. Travel to the T. Turn left again. The Goodsell Ridge will be the first left.
The Fisk Quarry Preserve, a 20 acre fossil reef site located on the west shore of Isle La Motte. Once on Isle La Motte follow signs to St. Anne’s Shrine. The Fisk Quarry Preserve is slightly more than four miles to the south on West Shore Road. Park in the designated area. Or from the Goodsell Ridge Preserve, return to the main road and turn left. Follow the road as it continues south and curves around to West Shore Road. The Fisk Quarry Preserve parking area will be on your right.
Visitors to these sites are asked to respect the rules of these protected sites which include no removal of plants, animals, or rocks from either of the preserves. Fossil collecting is strictly forbidden. These are places for quiet walking, observation and learning, but not for vehicular traffic, bicycles, or other activities which may damage the fragile ecosystem and geological formations of the preserves.
